5G is the fifth-generation technology standard for cellular networks, which mobile network operators began deploying worldwide in 2019, and is the planned successor to the 4G networks.
SWIFt 5G Network
The SWIFt 5G network is internal and external on the Clifton Campus at Nottingham Trent University. We operate on a OFCOM trial and development licence, which allows us to offer test facilities on our Nokia and Airspan equipment.

5G Technical Specialis
Syed Aqeel Raza recently joined SWIFt as 5G Technical Lead. Previously, he was associated with GlobalData PLC as a Research Analyst – Technology in Enterprise Technology & Services. Prior to that, he was working as an Assistant Professor at Hamdard University, Pakistan. He holds a Ph.D. in Computing from Sunway University, Malaysia, where his research areas included Software-Defined Radio, Wireless Networks, Reinforcement Learning and real testbed implementation using USRP and GNU Radio. He authored/co-authored several publications that have been published in well reputed journals and conference venues. Besides Ph.D., he has dual master’s degrees from Sweden and Pakistan in Telecommunication and Communication & Signal Processing, respectively. Aqeel also has many years of industry experience of working in leading roles in various renowned telecommunication and networking sector companies internationally including Malaysia and Denmark.
Whilst we focus currently on 5G, we have an eye on the future with discussions around 6G starting to happen.
